All people need to utilize healthcare professionals and services throughout their lifetime. It is important that people make regular visits to their physicians, dentists and other healthcare professionals for checkups and to keep tabs on their health. My suggestion is not that people stop going to see their doctor or dentist on a regular basis. I do want to suggest, however, that people could significantly cut down on the costs and inconveniences of making visits to see various healthcare professionals if they would do simple things to take care of their own health.

We all know that taking care of our health is important. But how many of us actually spend our days accordingly? How many of us take our health as a matter of life and death? I would suggest that many of us take not only our ability to see healthcare professionals for granted but we also take our very health for granted. Most people I know are caught up in what they should do or could do for their health and very few people are actually presently doing good things. Getting proper healthcare and having proper health are ideals rather than norms.

Most people could cut down on frequent trips to see healthcare professionals simply by adopting a more active lifestyle. It is amazing how many sicknesses and even diseases can be prevented by consistently exercising our bodies. We were designed to move and to use energy yet we rarely use our bodies to their full potential. Most people have no idea what level of physical fitness is possible for their lives because inactivity has become a way of life. Whatever your current level of fitness, you can start today to take control of your health by getting more active. Look for ways to incorporate more movement into your everyday life.

Another obvious way to make your healthcare provider proud is to watch what you eat. In many ways, it is true that your body and your health becomes what you eat. Years spent eating fast food and making unhealthy food choices will eventually catch up to you. What we eat affects our energy levels and our overall health. Find ways to cut out fast food, soda and other high calorie beverages. Incorporate fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains into your diet as often as possible. Drink water instead of other beverages. You might be shocked by how these small changes decrease your need to schedule frequent visits to see your healthcare professional.

If you or someone close to you suffers from diabetes, you know what a life-altering condition it is. It all sounds pretty simple, but it’s not. Even after proper diagnosis, diabetes symptoms and diabetes treatment greatly vary from person to person. With Type 1, insulin injections are almost always required, but dosage varies, and diet and lifestyle can make a big difference. Type 2 can often be managed with dietary changes, exercise and supplements but, again, it varies from person to person. The difference between controlling diabetes properly and letting it go unchecked can be the difference between a normal, healthy life and one with serious complications that can result in deteriorating health and life-threatening conditions.

One thing that can help is being informed. And that doesn’t mean just a half-hour consultation with your doctor although that, of course, is mandatory and the start of all treatment. My physician told me to do my own research and educate myself as much as I could. He said knowing about a disease and its various treatment options would allow me to determine what is right for me. The problem with gathering diabetes information is not that there isn’t enough, but that there is so much and in so many different places. I found one that was easy to navigate and covered all aspects of diabetes, with a directory to over two dozen diabetes-related topics such as exercise, diets, drugs, symptoms, testing, treatments, prevention, blogs, forums and more. The site also contained a large number of original articles by diabetes experts or just people who have learned to live with diabetes and wanted to share their knowledge and experience.

There is a great deal of useful information on diabetes out there, but it doesn’t help much if it is scattered all over the web or written in incomprehensible medical jargon. There is a lot said about health care these days. With costs rising and no end in sight there is a bigger need than ever for everyone to have the coverage of a health care plan. There are many types of health care plans available. Each type breaks down into two basic groups: group or individual. Group plans are the least expensive option. They are provided through an employer. Individual plans are offered through private companies and can cost much more than group plans because there are no group discounts to the provider. Within each group there are a few different type of health care plans.

Fee for service plans are the most common and traditional forms of health care coverage. With a fee service the covered individual gets many choices of doctors and hospitals. The insurance provider pays for a portion of your costs while you pay a fee. You pay both a monthly fee for coverage and fees based on the care you receive. Many times there is a deductible that must be met before the insurance provider pays anything. Most plans also have a maximum amount you will pay out of pocket. Health maintenance organizations or HMO’s are another type of health care plan. HMO’s charge a monthly fee. You are required to use certain doctors who are signed up with the HMO. You pay a fee for any costs you incur called a co-payment. The total costs of any medical care is negotiated between the doctor and the HMO so the costs are lower.

Preferred provider organizations or PPO’s are a combination of the fee based plan and an HMO. There are limits on the doctors and hospitals you can choose, you make a co-payment for each service and you may have a deductible. You can, however, use a doctor that is not part of the PPO. You will still get coverage but you may end up paying a larger fee.

There are other forms of health care plans. The government offer two plans: Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare is a plan for people over age 65 or disabled. The coverage provided by Medicare often changes and can be confusing. There are different types of Medicaid. There is a free type and a fee based type. Medicaid is another government offered plan. It is based on income. With Medicaid all of your expenses are covered. New changes have made it so some care requires a very small fee. There are also variations in Medicaid. Study: Consumer-Driven Health Plans on the Horizon

Health care costs have continued to skyrocket and every politician, business owner and employee is trying to find ways to cut costs.

The recent Buying Trends Study, released by the National Association of Health Underwriters and ChapterHouse LLC, shows that nearly 90 percent of insurance agents and brokers predict that the health insurance market will look remarkably different within the next five to 10 years. They predict a shift away from traditional plans and a migration to consumer-driven health plans.

With open enrollment season upon us, consumers have a chance to evaluate these consumer-driven plans and decide if these new options might be right for them. Past editions of this study have accurately predicted other health care changes, so these findings carry a great deal of weight among industry leaders.

Consumer-driven health plans, which include health reimbursement accounts and health savings accounts, are high-deductible medical plans that are coupled with a savings account. Employees can use those funds to pay their health care costs.

With lower premiums than traditional health insurance plans, consumer-driven health plans enable consumers to choose what kind of health care services they would like to receive, making them more active participants in the decision-making process.

Nearly 30 percent of employers are planning to offer these consumer-driven health plans, and employees will need to determine if they are ready to switch to this new way of approaching health care.

The study also revealed that there is not much hope for those awaiting nationalized health care. Only 3 percent of respondents felt that there was a likelihood of adopting a single-payer system and only 7 percent saw U.S. government mandates in America’s future.

While the future of health care is still unknown, the study predicts that America is headed toward private market initiatives to help solve this crisis.
